Software RAID

Software RAID is provided by the operating system or other software. This is a cheap way to provide RAID, and can also be used across systems like NFS on Linux to provide RAID over a network between two drives in different machines.

Software RAID is much slower than Hardware RAID for most RAID levels, as it consumes CPU cycles.
